This study aimed to identify and describe the problems in fractions and the factors that cause difficulties at the fifth-grade students of MI An-Nazwa. This study was conducted using qualitative descriptive methods, with data collected through interviews, observation, and documentation. The participants of this study were the fifth-grade teacher and fifth-grade students at MI An-Nazwa. The results showed that the difficulty in learning mathematics in the fraction material experienced by fifth-grade students at MI An-Nazwa has three components: difficulty in understanding concepts in fractional number material; difficulty in counting abilities on multiplication and division arithmetic operations material; and difficulty in solving problems in narrative form. While the factors that caused students’ learning difficulty in the fifth grade of MI An-Nazwa consist of two parts: internal factors (within the students) and external factors (outside the students). The internal factors include students’ bad learning attitudes, low levels of student intelligence, lack of enthusiasm for studying mathematics, and lack of learning motivation. The external factors include family environmental factors, i.e. a lack of parental attention to student learning activities; school environmental factors, i.e. lack of various teaching methods; the lack of using creative mathematics learning media; and social factors, i.e. the influence of mass media, in which students use gadgets and watch TV more often, so that student learning activities become forgotten.
